U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION Press Release March 21, 2005 U.S. Border Patrol apprehends trio of sexual predators All three are convicted felons Tucson, AZ – Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Tucson Station apprehended three sexual predators in a span of three days near Sasabe/Arivaca. The first arrest occurred about two miles east of Sasabe on March 16th. At approximately 9 p.m., agents patrolling the border on all-terrain vehicles detected and apprehended a group of 57 illegal aliens. All were determined to be from Mexico and transported to the Tucson Station. At the Station, record checks through the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) indicated that one individual, Nicolas Jacinto-Huerta, of Oaxaca, Mexico, had a criminal and immigration history. Records revealed that Jacinto had been arrested on in 2002 on one count of “Sex with a Minor”. Jacinto was convicted and sentenced to 6 months probation and 180 days in jail. Jacinto was subsequently removed from the United States in 2003. Jacinto is currently in federal custody awaiting a felony charge of “Re-entry of an Aggravated Felon” and “Removal Proceedings”. The second and third arrest occurred south of Arivaca on March 18th. At approximately 9 p.m., agents patrolling the border on all-terrain vehicles responded to an assistance call from a Customs and Border Protection Air Operations helicopter. When agents arrived on scene, CBP Special Agents had 35 illegal aliens in custody. CBP Special Agents had deployed from the helicopter to detain the group for further questioning by Border Patrol Agents. All were determined to be from Mexico and transported to the Tucson Station. At the Station, record checks through IAFIS indicated that one individual, Jose Ramos Salmeron, of Michoacan, Mexico, had been arrested and convicted of “Aggravated Sexual Assault” and “Indecency with a Child, Sexual Contact”in Williamson, County, Texas, in 2001. Ramos was sentenced to one year in prison. Ramos was subsequently removed from the United States upon serving his sentence. Ramos is currently in federal custody awaiting a felony charge of “Re-entry of an Aggravated Felon” and “Removal Proceedings”. Record checks through IAFIS also indicated that another individual in the same group, Carlos Avila-Gonzalez, of Michoacan, Mexico, had been arrested and convicted of “Assault to Commit Mayhem Rape ect.” in San Jose, California, in 1996. Avila was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Avila was again arrested and convicted in 1998 for “Assault with intent to commit rape/sodomy” in Susanville, California. Avila was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Avila was subsequently removed from the United States in 1999. Avila is currently in federal custody awaiting a felony charge of “Re-entry of an Aggravated Felon” and “Removal Proceedings”. Since October 1, 2004, Tucson Sector Border Patrol Agents have arrested 15,968 illegal aliens with criminal records. Of these, 166 had been convicted for sexual offenses. The total compares to 17,011 criminal aliens arrested in all of fiscal year 2004 (10/01/03 – 09/31/04).
